 MacArthur Foundation Grant Initiatives

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Grant

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced the award’s grantees for State and Local Housing Preservation Leaders on February 26, 2009. The Foundation provided $32.5 million in funding for the development and expansion of innovative public sector initiatives preserve and improve the existing stock of affordable rental housing nationwide to 12 public agencies. The $32.5 million investment consisted of $9.5 million in grants and an additional $23 million in low-interest loans called Program Related Investments. These awards are part of the Foundation’s Window of Opportunity initiative, a national $150 million, 10-year effort preserve affordable rental homes across the nation.

 

In response to a Letter of Interest submitted to the Foundation, the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) and the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA/LA) were invited to submit a full proposal to the Foundation on March 14, 2008. State and local governments in 40 states competed for MacArthur’s financial support.

 

On February 26, 2009, the Foundation awarded the City a $1 million dollars in grant funds to enhance its affordable housing preservation efforts.  The Foundation granted $700,000 three-year grant to LAHD and $300,000 to the CRA/LA.  Los Angeles was the only city in California that was awarded a grant. This is also the first MacArthur Foundation grant ever received by the City.

 

MacArthur Initiatives

LAHD will use grant funds to enhance its Affordable Housing Preservation Program (AHPP) to better coordinate its efforts with other city departments and target its resources to preserving affordable rental housing by hiring additional staff and channeling resources to undertake a four-prong complementary initiative (see below):
